Our research infrastructure
KCM maintains an internal research team rather than outsourcing conviction to Wall Street. Every recommendation in a client portfolio traces back to an analyst here who can defend it — a structure that is unusual for a firm our size, and the reason a client in Kansas can speak directly to the person responsible for a position.
Ideas originate from our analysts' own screening, industry work, company contacts, and long-standing relationships — not from purchased research or third-party recommendations.
Analysts model the business, test the balance sheet, meet management where possible, and pressure-test the thesis with the wider team before a position is proposed.
Portfolio managers size positions to the mandate in front of them and hold them with patience, because our conclusions are our own and we know what we own.

Joe leads KCM with the discipline of an accountant and the perspective of someone who has spent his career inside the investment business. A CPA by training, he holds the firm to the standard that every number a client is shown must be a number the firm can stand behind — and that the relationship, not the transaction, is the product.

John founded KCM in 1989 on a conviction that has not changed since: do the research yourself, buy businesses rather than tickers, and stay patient long enough for the work to matter. He founded the Buffalo Funds in 1994 and remains the firm's intellectual anchor.
